Bob Marley earned the title "Tuff Gong" for his fierceness as a street-fighter. 'Gong' was also the nickname of the early Rastafarian leader Leonard Howell. The nickname's significance was further reinforced by the fact that in some Rasta settlements it is customary for a convert to the Rastafarian culture to strike a gong hanging at the entranceway to announce their first step into the fold.
